Don’t know if anyone else has considered this – I’d really like to cut down on the noise of my SRT intake. Yes, at certain rpms/throttle opening it does sound good – it growls. But, on the whole, I’d rather it be more quiet. SRT doesn’t really offer a closed cold air box – Weapon does. My question is: will the Weapon air box fit the SRT intake (or vice versa)?
It can’t be too far off – I’d expect the air box hole (through which the intake tube passes) to be close to the same position. Has anyone else tried this? And if so, is there a noticeable reduction in overall noise?
There have been a number of prior posts similar to this (not specifically about using Weapon R, but about putting a closed box on SRT intake), including some of the SC folks building tops for their cold air box that looked pretty good.
Someone with a GS (DavidGS400 I believe?) actually had one made for their SRT intake and it worked to quiet it, but caused stalling problems because the airflow characteristics were significantly changed. I'd imagine the Weapon-R box would cause a very similar problem.
One thing I thought about (have a post somewhere back on the SRT section of CL) was building a better seal around the airbox to the hood using weatherstripping or something similar.
Hey Dave – yeah, I had one of the fabricated ones for my SC4 – another CL guy made a bunch and sold them on the SC forum – but as you know, they have to be built to fit a specific model. It was only moderately effective at noise reduction, mostly because it was constructed from thin sheet metal (thinner than the SRT shield.) I bought some insulation to line the box with but sold the SC before applying it. I didn't have any negative results from using that one and haven't heard any bads from the Weapon guys here (they'd never admit it anyway!)
I also thought about the SRT unit benefiting from a better seal – in fact, I thought about a hose, split and pushed down on the sheet metal. I haven’t determined how much space there is between the top edge of the current shield and the hood insulation. If that gap is too large, the hose idea wouldn’t work. Maybe I’ll check into that today. Just figured that someone would have tried the combination already. Thanx.

I have a solution for you....I have the weapon R intake...very loud...UNTIL I put on a heat shield air filter....and this thing really works...it make the car instantly quiet yet still gave performance gains and a nice growl under WOT....I have a brand new one too, I somehow accquired two, so I'll let it go for $30 if any one wants it....I'll even pay for shipping...Deal?
Originally posted by Dex Somebody please correct me, but using that "heatshield", you still draw in the heated air from the engine compartment, right?
How, or from where, does the cool air come??
When you drive cold air naturaly comes form the front of the car. It then circulates around the engine uping the temp. This filter only allows air from the front end to enter the filter. Working like any heat shield like SRT or RMM.

I don't think so.
The SRT intake pulls air from behind the bumper, through a passageway near the foglight.
Is the heatshield flush with the hood interior? No, I know, but close enough for the majority to flow from the intended cold source.
