Differential Fluid Change ?

Does anyone even bother to change their differential fluid ? If so, how often ? What brand of fluid should be used ?

Best get in the habit of changing ALL fluids per your owners manual on a regular basis: Power steering,Tranny,Coolant,Diff,Engine oil,Brake fluids, yep ALL of-em!

Just wanted to report that I changed my diff fluid this past weekend. After about 62K miles, the Mobil1 synthetic gear oil I had put in there was surprisingly clear, very unlike used engine motor oil. It almost seemed like I didn't really need to change it yet. I refilled it with Amsoil synthetic 75-90W, which they claim has a 500K mile service life in fleet trucks, so I don't expect to be changing it for the rest of the life of the car (I have 132K on the GS now.). No apparent difference in performance (acceleration, etc.).

What a freakin mess though!!! I had a funnel under the drain plug, and I made the mistake of letting the plug drop into the funnel, and it completely blcoked the flow. The funnel filled up and I got oil all over my driveway and me, before I could recover and get the damn plug back out. Overall the job is pretty easy, but there's always somthin' stupid like this that kills the joy.

Amsoil, Royal Purple, or Mobil1 recommended. Just don't bother with traditional dino oil types like the Toyota stuff.
