However, you are right about the V-8 IS-F needing more air...
Above 3,600 RPM's, the IS-F air box has a vacuum controlled door that flips open to suck more air in from the passenger side fender compartment.. During normal driving, the air is only sucked in through the one ram air scoop... When you floor it or pass 3,600 rpms, the second stage door opens and allows more air to flow into the box compartment.
This is why it carries the term "Two-stage Intake System"

This thread is embarrassing!
I'm sorry, to say it.
We are over here talking about "drilling holes," in our intake box.
While the 335i guys are talking about what Chip they are going to use and many how lbs of boost they are pushing.
Oh and to top it off, adding a second intercooler...
Again Sorry!
lol

Haha, so it seems some bimmer dealers are scouting the forums for perpetrators. Heres a little snippet from the thought patrol going on over there:
- Hi, I'm the general manager, please come with me.
- Have a seat.
Ookay then. I sit down.
- Is your alias c-o-o-n-t-i-e on bimmerfest?
- ARE YOU COONTIE?
I stammer, "Uh.. no." (OK, I wasn't gonna crack on the first question! Once the cattleprods were to come out, maybe then but surely not immediately. Plus, I think I'd be less flabbergasted if he had said, "We have a new M3 we don't need, it's your to keep.")
- Well, we have a reason to believe you are.
Then, he takes out a manila folder and (looking at it upside-down), it's full of my bimmerfest print-outs, certain passages highlighted. He takes a page out.
- It says here you once referred to buying a car at our dealership as "like being sodomized with a broomstick."

I was quite surprised at the difference, not overly loud, just a subdued howl .
May be my imagination but pick-up seems to have improved, especially from standing or from relatively low speed. Could it be the intake under the front of the hood is restrictive??

No. If this were the case we'd see significant increases from open element type intakes. We do not.

I had a test drive in an IS-F a few hours after testing my airbox box mod....and had to wonder why I bothered

The reason for the extra hole in the airbox on the F-sport intake is so it makes more noise.
A surprising number of folks who drop a ton of cash on aftermarket parts want more noise.
See also some of the crazy-expensive exhaust systems that don't add much else... or any of the open-element intakes that suck in hot air but sure are loud.

I am going to shave my airbox tomorow (ie, remove the fins). I dont see how it could possible hurt and if its louder then yay. I will not however drill holes in it, just want to make that clear. We shall see what happens.

I believe the fins are there to even out the air flow over the filter. Removing them will not make the sound any different.
