Default draining transmission

When you drain the transmission do you have to drain the torque converter too? I want to change to synthetic amsoil for the tranny withount a machine flush. So can I do 3 drains, once a week while putting in the amsoil to fully convert to amsoil? Will it be okay to mix the ATF IV with the Amsoil in this process?

amsoil is too expensive to water it down with T IV. You need like 16 quarts to come out...imagine if you swapped 2 quarts at a time with ethe drain & fill how much you'd have to go through to get the fluid to be mostly amsoil.

BananaGS did a good write up how to flush out the old fluid with the new. I did the same flush method. unhook the tranny cooler and put the passenger side hose in a jug. drain & fill the tranny pan, start the car & shift back & forth til 2 quarts comes out & fill again. Rinse, lather & repeat til 16 quarts comes out. I still have trouble believing there's that much fluid. wow

Yes you do have to drain the torque convertor because its got quite a bit of old fluid in it too. Shifting the tranny while its sucking in new fluid should accomplish this.

Or you can just take it to a shop that has a machine that sucks out all the old stuff while pumping in the new. A few guys here swear by it, but I haven't tried it on my car yet.

Just do it banana's way. It's a sure and cheap way to get most of the fluids replaced. Draining and refilling will take forever to even get close to having full amsoil.

Right, it is 12 quarts. I miscounted how many bottles in a case & keep thinking its 16.
