Default Installed Headers yet? How are they holding up so far?

Just trying to figure out the failure rate on the headers for the V8 engines.

1. Have your S&S Headers cracked or not?

2. If you have had them re-welded, let us know how they are holding up now?

3. How many miles per year do you drive (approximately)?

4. Do you race/drag race your car?

5. Which batch did you get?

I think the mod is an amazing mod , however for someone like myself - having to pay a mechanic to re-install them at $300 - $400 each time they have to be taken out and re-welded is not a viable or cost effective option.

For those that can do this install themselves, that cost is not a limitation, just the time may be. So this mod is for some people and not for others.

Not trying to be *****y about anything here, just being practical for what my pocket can afford that's all. So, please don't misunderstand my motives for posting this thread. I am not trying to scare off any potential buyers.

I finally placed my order last week for the new and improved headers (more welds in strategic locations and a thicker gauge steel for the down-pipe), however I do not wish to be the guinea pig to try them out only to find that they have the potential to fail.

I just sent an email to Betty this morning cancelling my order in as much as I didn't want to do that.....

I'm looking forward to replies on this thread as well, this is what is causing me to wait on making this purchase, I just want to buy and install and be done with it...don't want to take apart and fix...and fix...and fix again

i installed my headers more than a year ago, love them. i dropped 3th on the 1/8 track. that's a good mod in my and my friends opinion. no crack yet and hope not one ever. good thing i didn't know about this problem untill after i got them, maybe i would still be waiting around.

WOW... 3 tenths in the eigth mile is HUGE. Is that with the same 60 foot times? Seeing that your is a 400 the gain should be even better on the 430s. Did you pick up any MPH?

If I had a 3 tenths gain in the 1/4 my car would have gone 13s!
Ironically, after getting these created, they are not a bolt in for MY car For Loren to create me a custom set I will need LS400 manifolds to send to him.

So whats the story....these S&S headers problematic? I was thinking about starting to mod my GS400 as I have wasted countless thousands on my 05 Acura TL and am FAR from satisfied with the results power wise....so I figured I would start on my other car at this point. BUT...this possibility of having cracked headers or bad welds does concern me. I will be tracking it...autocrossing it....dragging it...ect. therefore I do need good parts. Whats the story.....is this going to be a problem? From what I am reading...tells me to wait for a long time for another batch of headers....but (and I am new here...first post right here)looking at the original post dates....should that have happened already? Should I buy from a specific vendor to avoid this problem on the first batch? Fill me in guys! Thanks in advance. (also been looking at these SRT intakes....any rec on that would also be appreciated....this the best way to go or is the K&N just as good) Sorry for the run on there.

O.K. Hameed,
Here it goes my friend.
1) Yes. Both sides.
2) Rewelded on both sides. Although, I think Loren sent me a new set. Had to remove metal on inside of the collector flange again. To accommodate for the lip on the cats. Holding up well. Have had them for about a month and a half.
3) Approx. 9k
4) Have only been to the track one time. After the first header install.
5) Very first batch.
For more on S&S headers. Check this thread.

you are the guy with the long header thread and you don't have headers your self; that bites.
i picked up about 1 to 2 tenths in the 60ft and about 2 to 3mph, but 3/10 of total ET with 20s. then next week i had 16" stocks and TRD LSD and subtracted another 10th of total ET. i was expecting more from LSD, since it was almost a thousend bucks. Glad I did not have to pay for install, pops hooked it up as headers too. i seen post here of memebers saying they paid close and sometimes over a thousend
JBRADY you deserve to get your self some headers you will like that mid power our cars have a lot better after this mod

1. Have your S&S Headers cracked or not? Yes, twice

2. If you have had them re-welded, let us know how they are holding up now?
Crack at end of weld since the first re-weld.

3. How many miles per year do you drive (approximately)?
14000 miles, but I have a very heavy foot.

4. Do you race/drag race your car?
Yes, every now and then I drag race to test the added performance parts.

5. Which batch did you get?
1st batch, #17 or so.

We did one a couple days back. The passenger side headers has a leak. Look like they didn't complete the weld. Shouldn't they inspect and test these headers before they shipped them out? I would!!!!!

I had mine put on 1 week ago by JPI. It concerns me that one of the welds wasn't completed and unfortunately we found it after the install. JPI had to take the passenger side off, fix the hole, and reinstall. These things should be leak tested before shipping but obviously aren't. The performance increase is noticeable and I really like the purr you get with or without an after market exhaust behind the headers.

I've been trying to get S&S headers to at least partially reimburse me for extra labor that was caused by the defect in their product but so far they've said no. Their defense is that they cover the part warranty only, and not labor. I think they need to bare some of this responsibility.

I've been driving around with a pretty heavy foot for the last week and no other issues so far.

for the price of the headers, you'd think quality control was much better...just another one of my useless opinions
