Default TRD LSD Noise

While in the shop, a mechanic noticed a small leak in the LSD housing. I had them replace the seals and ever since I have been getting a ticking noise when turning (especially when backing up and turning sharp). I remember somone in the past saying that many types of oil will cause this problem, but I have been unsuccesful finding a thread relating to this. I know I had royal purple installed originally, but I have no idea what they put in after fixing the leak.

Do you think it is the oil causing the problem? Or do you think I am starting to have issues with the TRD LSD?

I had a grinding type sound when turning and switched to Redline synthetic and it went away, but never had quite the ticking sound you describe.

Yes, the type of oil used for LSD aplications must be strictly obeyed.
You'll have to ask your mechanic what type of gear oil was used. I would recommend you to look and read this:

Gear Oil You Need
https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/svg.aspx

Additive You Need:
https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/ada.aspx

I would recommend you to replace oil first to make sure there is/or not chattering, noise coming from LSD unit, if you find LSD loud after oil replacement than go for ADA additive.

Hopefully damage is not extensive so you can enjoy your ride as always

At higher speeds (over 5 mph) it grinds, but at 1-2 miles per hour, it ticks.

I guess I will have to try to get the oil changed tomorrow.

Thanks for your input!

With the clutch-type TRD LSD he definitely needs the friction modifier... either get stuff with it built in (like the Redline I mentioned) or with a separate additive as Jake mentions above.

I get a grinding noise when the car is up in the air and I spin a wheel. Nothing audible while I am driving. I had Royal Purple before and have Amsoil now. No difference. Good luck
