i have searched stall converters and read all of the old posts, but stall speed really wasnt discussed. how big of a stall do you guys run if you are staying n/a. i was thinking around 3200-3400 would be nice. also, when i have seen them for sale, nothing is mentioned about how big it is. where do you guys order them from that make it stall whatever you want.
A common stall used on the GS4xx's is 2800. Ex. Precision Industries TC and RMM TC are both sold for the GS4xx @ a 2800 stall. Also, be sure to add a tranny cooler if you are going with these high stall TC's.
Any more than that, your drivability will not be as good. You'll probably be slipping most of the time unless you're over 3200RPM or whatever your stall speed is. 2800rpm is plenty for the GS400. I dont think anyone has ever gotten 3200rpm+ stall on their GS400 before.
i was reading some old posts and someone had purchased a 3400stall and said he liked it. i have had camaro's before with big stalls. i like the way they drive. 4000 stalls are pretty cool. it almost feels like you are stuck in the mud to you start to get out of the stall and then it runs like a bat out of hell.
No but it heats the fluid. I'm sure you know that.....that is what Rock probably meant.
The rated stall speed is 2800 like they said.
I get 3000 flash stall at the track.
Any more, as you are suggesting, would not suit well with this car/engine and using it as a daily driver.
I recall reading that 3400rpm stall also and as I recall, it was one of two threads that I am remembering.
1. it was a GS300 thus a 6 cylinder that comes stock with more stall than the V8 and so it needs more for the aftermarket part...or
2. it was one of the guys here with a supercharger and he ended up taking that 3400rpm convertor out and replacing it with a lower stall convertor.
I've never heard/read a single thing about the 'size' physically of the converter which is how we usually hear it with older cars.
Phrases like 8" converter (Coan) or 11" convertor (many B&M's) just aren't tossed around with this particular car. It's because the available choices are limited. You get 2800, that's it, unless you order a custom one.
If you've got the GS4, the TC is worth the money. It's a huge improvement. Go ahead and order one up!
