Default "WS" Tranny fluid same as Type IV?

Just some interesting reading from the Lexus website. I guess this only applies to 2004 & up GS models. Not that I think the "WS" is the same as Type IV fluid or is it??

The "WS" fluid is not the same as the TYPE T-IV. The new WS fluid is synthetic, unlike the old fluid.

The WS fluid does not need to be changed every 30,000 miles. Will it retrofit into the older transmissions? I can't say, but I have a gut feeling that it will.

I have used synthetic fluid in my 99 GS4 for over 2 years with no ill-effects. I would not go back to the factory stuff.

I remember renting and driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla during my timing belt change on the GS400, and while checking the engine oil, I noticed the automatic transmisson dipstick tube had a small decal onit. The decal stated that the transmission contained a synthetic fluid that did not need to be changed for the life of the car. Sounds like synthetic fluid to me.

This may be the "WS" fluid used in a lowly Toyota.

Yeah thanks for the reply. I did notice it on my tranny dipstick as well.

weird. I would have never guessed that 04+ GS had different trans fluid than T-IV like other 2nd gens. the trans is the same I believe.

oh and btw- how is synthetic fluid any more resistant to metal shavings than regular????? I'd still be changing at least every 30K.

I don't think that the 04+ GS's use this stuff. My user manual still states to use Toyota T-IV, and I don't have any special stickers on my tranny dipstick. I had to do a drain and refill recently because my tranny was slipping a bit due to the old fluid. My car has 20k miles on it, and I drive a bit hard I'm going to switch to Amsoil synthetic after I get my tranny race built.
