Ive looked at about 5 gs-es and Ive noticed that some engage so smoothly into D or R that you can barely notice...and some bump foward like regular cars do when you put it in gear? And some engage into D smoothly but not R, or vice versa.
Why is that? Is this something a new filter and fluid can change or is this a sign of a future problem?
All the GS cars ive looked at were about 100k miles, 98-01, 300 400 and 430 engines.
just depends on how you put it in gear and if you are on a slope or not... mine does it at times but i have notice it does it only on slopes or when you haven't completely stop the car and switch gears
these were all at a car auction on a 0.0% slope with the gear shifter slowly moved till it clicked into place....everything was done exactly the same. It doesnt make sense that 3 of the same 'high quality machines' would behave so differently unless they were worn differently, or in different states of operability.
It would make sense if a gs300 would engage different than a 430 but thats not necessarily the case.
So people on here have smooth engaging transmissions and some have ones that go into gear with a clunk (like any normal old cheap car) with no transmission problems?
What does a replacement transmission cost and how much does it weigh? can i lift it up and install it myself like a manual tranny?
Have the tranny flushed, and get your hands on some Amsoil Universal synthetic. Change the diff fluid while you are at it to any brand of your choice. The clunks will disappear once the tranny is flushed out and the synthetic tranny fluid is in. My car had the same symptoms early on in its life with the Toyota type 4 tranny fluid. The clunking is now history since I switched to Amsoil. The shifts are so butter smooth now, even in manual mode

when you did the flush with the synthertic fluid..did you flush it with type 4 fluid first then redo it with the synthetic amsoil? explain.. i wanna do this .. but with a flush i believe you need to have lots of fluid but i dont want to buy lots of syntheticfluid ya know how much did you buy.. and where from
Exactly the information i was looking for...so the rough engaging or clunk is just the tranny being dirty. I was afraid it was a symptom of some part being worn out or possibly broken.

My flush was done with Amsoil poured into this transmission flush machine. The machine exchanges the fluid so no need to drain and refill. http://www.autoprofit.com/bilstein_atf_spec.htm
It is 99.9% effective in removing the dirty oil. There is a place I go to in NYC that does my oil changes and he carries Amsoil. You guys can always purchase the Amsoil on your own if you can't find a place that carries it. You can then take it to a place that has the Bilstein transmission flush machine. Hee is info on the Amsoil. You can buy it direct.
shocker im interested in doing this on my car also as i believe a flush has never been done. with 89k on her is it safe to do? where is the shop u went to and how much can i expect to pay? thanks
