Default Need Torque Converter Advice

Gents (and ladies),

I was told that a good first performance mod would be the addition of a performance torque converter. Can anyone give me any feedback on the real-world results of adding one including:
• amount of torque increase it provides
• how it affects life of your engine
• does it affect gas mileage and drivability
• how much i can expect to pay for one installed

thanks in advance friends.

From the search function I found this thread. Should be enough since it also links to other threads on the topic.

1) don't really know the amount of "gain" in numbers. it's very obvious that's all i can say
2) don't think it's going to hurt anything unless you push it very hard every day. and if anything i think it hurts the tranny, not the engine. just make sure you get tranny cooler
3) probably lose 1-2mpg? depends on driving of course
4) install? about 600 bucks?
