I see from pics aftermarket exhaust tips don't stick out past the rear bumper. I suppose this is for asthetics. Does it look bad when they stick out of that curved part above the tip, say 1"?

Looking from behind, it wouldn't matter. But at different side angles, what do you guys think if they stick out 1"? What is the rule of thumb?

There is no rule.

Personal taste is subjective. "Too little" is not enough, and "too much" is ricey. You decide what's too little or too much...

 

No more than 1.75".

 

I've seen pics here on CL of exhausts with long tips, and I think it looks cheesy. I had an exhaust like that years ago, and I always seemed to either burn my legs on them or get soot on my pants when walking behind the car.

 

Sometimes the color of the vehicle can play a role in the way the exhaust looks and even the color of the exhaust (they have blackened exhausts).
