Default IMPORTANT! GS-series V8 Exhausts!!

If any of you are thinking about modifying your exhaust read this real quick. Just to let you know, rear section are of course mufflers, before that are 2 resonators shaped like large cigars. Before that on SOME cars(not california equipped) is a Resonator shaped like a very small muffler. If your car has something with what looks like lines cut perpendicularly in it. OR if your car is california equipped then this piece at the Y junction after the rear O2 sensors IS A CATALYTIC CONVERTOR!! I recently spoke to Hameed about his custom exhaust and on his car he has a resonator there, i wanted to do an exhaust like his but since mine is cali equipped then that is a cat which cannot be removed legally. just a heads up for you guys thinking about modding your exhausts.

actually I just had my custom exhaust done a couple months ago, and my exhuast guy informed me that the middle portion was a resonator, and my car is cali originally registered.

on the other hand, i have heard this mentioned before. for reference fact, my car is a 98 GS400. maybe the year might make a difference.

My 2004 GS430 definitely 'had' a catalytic convertor just before the resonators. It was a PITA to get someone to do my custom mid-pipe/x-pipe job, but I finally got it done. Oh ya, we don't get checked in Florida.

Is there a big performance difference with the cats off? I haven't seen dyno numbers, but I think it's not that great.

i doubt the performance is all that great. GS42, the year does make a difference i believe this was only on 99+ or 00+ im not sure what year it was but it is definitely a cat. its not a monitored cat so removing it wont throw a CEL, but you could potentially fail the visual inspection if the guy doing the smog test knows his shyt.

The year matters - (early) GS400s it's a resonator.

Default Rear Cats.

GS430 has a cat in that location. That is how it became the first LEV certified V8. That is also why we lost e-shift on the GS430s. Basicaly, If it is rounded and looks like a cat, it is. If it just looks like a small muffler, its a resonator.
