I bought a 1999 GS400 from an auction last week. It has over 200,000 miles! On my way home from the auction the engine light popped up and I was not able to accelerate. I pulled over and restarted the engine and it took gas fine. Today I was driving down a highway and it shut off completely. Again I tried to restart the engine but this time it wouldnt start at all. All the dash lights and stereo wereon so I dont think it is a battery. The ignition is turning and the engine sounds great but it wont catch. I had plans to change the timing belt, water pump, cam/crank seals, and valve cover gaskets/head gaskets but I think this is an electrical problem. Any suggestions?
The solution to this problem might be just a fuse. I don't remember the name of it though. Alternator fuse maybe? I remeber where it is located on GS3, not sure if it's in the same place on GS4.
Have the check engine condiction checked with a OBDII reader. It will show several codes in the order of failure. Have them looked at as a sequential failure towards an engine shutdown.
One error may be a symptom of a pervious error.

Im starting to think this is a fuel problem rather than electrical. When I turn the key the engine responds but goes out as soon as I try to give it gas. I've had a similar problem with another GS400 I have. When ever I allowed that GS to sit it would sputter on start up while white smoke shot out the exhaust and then the engine would give up. I had to change to fuel pump then.
I picked it up from the dealer and it rides smooth. The mechanics said the stalling was definitely a fuel problem. I bought it from the auction for $6500. I spent $2456 on maintenance :
Fuel Pump / Fuel Filter
Timing Belt / Water Pump
Camshaft Seals / Crankshaft Seal
Valve Cover Gasket / Head Gasket
Spark Plugs / Ignition Coils / Air Filter
