Default Anyone with opinions on "built transmissions"

I am in the market for a transmission, I need it to handle a minimum of 400-450hp at the wheels. This puts us well over 500hp at the crank.

As far as I can tell I have two real options

SRT or Level 10, at this point I am hoping someone with experience with either of these transmissions can tell me what they think of them.

If anyone else has any ideas on other options pleasae let me know.

Thanks.

Opinions, me?

This guy builds wimpy up 4L60e to take over 600ft*lbs and 600HP. I've heard bad things about Level10 in the past, some folks are really mad.

I've read bad things about Level 10 on other forums Morris, but have no personal experience with them. The SRT built tranny I'd imagine is in very few cars as well - so not much of an audience. I'd try to get in touch with some of the SRT TT Scorpion guys (Lexciting, TTurbpimp soon, Flashgordon) and solicit their opinon directly.

How about putting in a TH400 like some of the Supra guys do

Those guys are right in my back yard but they don't really specialize in import transmissions. Now when/if my trans goes on the blink I'd be willing to be the guinea pig but I don't think I'd give them a "good" trans and risk it going kablooey.

Ok, here's some information/ options/ opinions on the tranny issue. THe stock tranny in our cars cannot be "fully" built. Unfortuantely all of the clutch packs, etc. are not available for the 5 speed tranny. The SRT built tranny is basically as built as this particular tranny can be. That being said, I know that Flashgordon has not had any issues at all with his SRT built tranny holding up under 500 hp. I too have heard negative things about level 10 on other forums, so I personally would not even go there. Another option is Boostlogic, they have a great reputation from everything I have read. I have talked to them about building this tranny, and the possibility of dropping another tranny in the car....they seem to know their stuff. I have put alot of thought into this subject, and at the end of the day I think Im going to go with the SRT built tranny. I have somewhat of a guarantee by Mo that it will hold up. I have put serious thought into mating up a Supra automatic tranny, which can be built full tilt to easily handle anything that we plan to throw at it. Then there is the always interesting topic of going Supra TT 6 speed conversion!!

I talked to Sound Performance in the CHicago area(big Supra Tuner), they also threw out the idea of going with the Chevy tranny.

i would get a 5 speed manaul tranny from the supra for cheap (and they are super strong) and fit it on the 400. i have all the bell housing and clutches and flywheels ready of course you will have to battle with the ecu

I spoke with Flash, it sounded like he wasnt really happy with the transmission when he was pushing the 500hp. He had it redone by Peter Farrell http://www.pfsupercars.com/index.htm
He said he is very happy with it now.

As for that chevy transmission or the manual, it sounds tempting but, I'm to poor to experiment right now

Well, I am keeping my power output to a max of 450rwhp for daily driving, just to be safe. I haven't had any problems with my built transmission. The shifting is good, with an occassionaly hiccup between 1st and 2nd shifts every once and awhile if I reset the battery, after the car adjusts to the boost then no problems with that(knock on wood). I guess it depends on how much you are going to push your GS in terms of rwhp. Over 400rwhp, you definitely would want to get stronger components for your car, especially if it is a daily driver. IMHO

my IS300 auto was putting >600RWHP throuhg a PFS upgraded tranny. I had a supra sprag put in it and a valve body upgrade a la PFS. It was supposed to be good up to 800ft*lbs with this setup

then! creme de la creme, I installed one of these babies:

I will have to do al of this again because I now have a boosted GS300. it's like a recurring theme with me!

Morris......I have had different feedback from Flash.......he said he was good with the actual build up the SRT tranny, just not the shifting. He originally went to PFS to get their tranny ECU, he then got some other stuff done (you know how that goes).
