Default Oil Change

i searched but didn't really find my answer. My car needs oil change, its $52 if i go to the dealer, I would like to know if i should change the oil or let the dealer do it? i am capable of doing it cause i did it on my other cars. Which oil and filter should i use? thanks a bunch, any suggestions, comments are welcome.

well go to maintenance section and you should find a butt load of info there even w/o searching.

well roughly its gonna run you a good 30bucks to DIY given that u alreayd have the oil catch and equipment. mobil 1 5w30 (5 quart jug goes for 19.xx @ walmart) + 1qt. and a toyota oil filter. dont know the part number right off the top of my head but do snooping in maintenance and you find it.

edit: to keep you under the car less, if not mobil 1 oil, just stick with full synthetic.

Or just regular motor oil. It doesn't have to be synthetic.

ok, so u recommend mobil 1 5w30? isn't mobil 1 synthetic? For toyota filter i would have to go to lexus or toyota dealer? and just ask for a filter for lexus gs300?
Why 5w30 and not 10w30?

I use Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30 and my engine does run more smoothly and quietly...whether its the oil, it could be? My 4runner 3.0 also ran smoothly on Castrol Synthetic Blend 10w30 when changing from standard Castrol 10w30 conventional.

I use Fram's Standard, Heavy-Duty, or Dbl Guard...depending on my budget at the time. The Double Guard Fram filter (although more expensive) is supposed to have the ability to be used for 2 oil changes, before replacing. By the way the filter on the GS4.0 & 4.3 is PH3619, (might be the same on the 3.0?)

Go to Toyota, it will cost you less. $5 from Toyota or $10 from Lexus. If Toyota gives you resistance tell them you want a filter for a 98 supra.

Mobil 1 makes both regular and synthetic. Check your manual for the weight of oil suitable for your driving conditions.

if your car has low miles, then i would use synthetic 5w-30...it the miles are high, then synthetic 10w-30. i've been using synthetic 5w-30 on my gs400, but i'm approaching 85,000 miles...as such, my lexus mechanic told me to begin using synthetic 10w-30.

Gasket = washer right?

I have to get a filter soon. The last time I a filter from Lexus, it looks so damn crappy! Looks like the ones FRAM makes.

I remember seeing the filter that SC300Es had when he did his oil changed......looked pretty damn high tech.

Is there a "good" filter and a "not so good" filter? For Hondas, there was a huge debate going about this....

Just use 5-30 year round for your location. No need to switch. The W means winter.
