'98 was the first year VVT-i was introduced. The '98-'00 GS300-400 have better acceleration than the '01-'04 GS300-430 the newer models are "drive by wire". Who know maybe the '05 third generation GS might out perform the 400? It's going to be pretty damn tuff.

just to be clear, the "better acceleration" probably refers to the better throttle response. i drove the gs430, sc430, and the pre 04 ls430. they all have the same problem on acceleration, very bad response. the drive by wire system is just weird i think

I believe all GS400/430s are drive by wire, the difference in throttle response is due to the computer. My 99 has a cable going to the throttle, and if I pull on it the throttle will not open unless the engine is running.

Just in case you guys were wondering why the early GS' had a cable going to the throttle body. It was for "Fail safe" Just in case something goes wrong. The check engine light would come on in the dash. And the car would be in what is known as "Limp home mode". When you step on the accellerator, you would have 30% throttle manually through the cable. Meaning you would only have 30% throttle max. Just enough to get you home, the dealer or your personal mechanic. The later models have no cable. They are a true fly by wire set up. You will still get 30% throttle in limp home mode via an electric motor hooked up to the throttle body.
