intake question
is your friend's intake an open element or closed element intake? (closed meaning using the stock airbox, like the PLP, JoeZ; open element like the K&N, SRT, AEM, Injen). that will help narrow down the cause of the problem...
when that lag happened to my car, it was b/c one end of the intake pipe was slipping, so there was a small open gap...once i retightened everything, it was fine. have your friend check the intake & all the parts involved...
sorry i can't help you out more!

Did he run it without an airfilter before he bought the ebay one?
The first thing I would check is to make sure the MAF is in the pipe correctly. Then to make sure all the hose connections are secured. If everything looks ok, are there any hoses that you removed to take out the stock intake still disconnected?
Lastly, if it still is bogging, remove the MAF and get a flashlight and look inside the cylinder that sticks into the intake pipe. If it looks dirty on the very thin and very fragile wires, there are two of them, you need a new one. If you want to make sure that is the problem swap out a known good one and see if it fixes the problem. If all else fails, take it to the dealer or to a tech that you can trust and knows what they are doing.
Remember that this is only advise, so be very careful when dealing with these very fragile engine components.
