Default LSD install: pinion gear removal necessary?

I read the repair manual and also like to clarify if removal of pinion gear is a must. I think it only need to be pressed out if the pinion gear and or shaft is out of spec when using a dial for runout.

So, if it checks out i should be able to drop the LSD without touching the pinion gear? And of course i need to check backlash, runout, install new side bearings, o-rings, etc...
