Default Question about R154/1JZ pricing

I've been looking for a tripod r154 for awhile and I have noticed on ebay that the transmissions are listed for around 2500. Then they have the r154/1jz combos for only 500 bucks more. Is the 1jz only worth 500 bucks or am I missing something here. Id think about purchasing the combo if I could recoup some of the money by selling the 1jz. I would hope it would be worth at least 1000 though. Any thoughts?

I am assuming you are looking for a Soarer R154? I would go ahead and purchase the whole complete deal. Do you have the 1JZ now or the 2JZ?

2jz, I am not looking for a usdm r154. Are there differences between the jdm tripod r154's?

You should be able to get $1k-1500 for the 1j by itself. Tax season is here, there will be a bunch of idiots that have no idea what they are doing aside from building "a sick drift car with a 1jz". The. When they don't finish their car, you can buy it back for cheap and resell for another profit.

So what did you decide to do? Decision made yet?

Thanks for the replies, I have not made up my mind yet. I don't really want to have a 1j laying around collecting dust for months. I could strap the w58 to the 1j and maybe get a few more dollars for the whole dropout. Does it matter what harness/ECU is attached to the engine for resale? Chaser? Soarer? I think that looks like the only difference when looking at them.

W58 attached you could prob ge 2k. Advertise towards Cressida/240 people with front sump, rear sump to mk3/sc people. Harness shouldn't matter unless you actually get a soarer engine since people are willing to pay ridiculous prices for a soarer harness because its super simple to make work in sc. IMO you could get $1800 quick for it with a w58 attached because that means an ambitious person (they're still out there!) can have a complete swapped car for $2500 minus car. I just picked up a clean $800 sc that just needed an ac clutch and lcas. And there seems to be more like that, so I'd say based on time of year this would be an absolute awesome time to pull the trigger on this. Your price could beat importers by a fair sight and impulse buys are common the next couple months.

Vrank tends to sugar coat and beat around the bush, but I think what he is trying to say is that you should buy the engine and transmission together...

I could be wrong, but I was thinking that I read somewhere that the Chaser tripod shifter is slightly longer (farther aft) than the Soarer counterpart? Not sure, but it may be worth verifying that they are the same.

yeah I was also wondering if they were the same length or not between the chaser and the soarer one.

Cross referenced the part numbers for the tripod, same trans all the way around. So jzx90/100 and late soarer r154 is all the same jazz.

The driveshaft might be of a different length on the Chaser R154 chassis but that's just a guess. Someone correct me if I'm off. The tripod R154's should have no differences as mentioned above. Only the MKIII R154's have the known differences from the later Soarer/Chaser/Mark2/Cresta/Verossa tripod R154's.

OP, I also think it's probably worth it to buy the whole package if you want to recoup some cost.

Who cares about drive shafts? Stock auto has same yoke as r154, 1pc and don't look back. Pretty sure I paid less than $200 for this service at a local drive train shop.

That's a beauty of these cars-- many ways to skin a cat. Some prefer an MKIII or Soarer R154 front shaft for the two-piece route. Others like a 1-piece solution as you described. To each his own.
