Getting ready to slap a gte head gasket on my ge, and the surface of the block looks a little rough, here's a picture to show you, when I run my finger across it, it doesn't really feel rough, but I can feel something.

is it going into the block or going out of it? If it's digging into the block i might be a tad concerned but if it's just a bump sand it down carefully and you should be fine

In some spots it feels raised and in others it feels like it goes down, it's only in these couple spots though, I didn't notice this too much the first time I changed the gasket and it didn't affect it, so I don't think it would but I rather be safe than be pulling this head again

If it wasn't leaking before just use a blade to get the old gasket off without scratching, clean it and put it on.
I dunno about using sandpaper you may turn a non-problem into an actual problem.

Wet sand it with oil on the sand paper.

yeah just look around and if it looked like it sealed before fine just scrap the gunk off.

i never heard of trying to sand a mating surface as critical as a block to head before by hand

this x100% .. however , if your fingernail can feel a ridge or divot etc etc , then you should get the block decked smooth .. if both surfaces are not 100% when you metal hg's then theirs a high probability of hg failure relatively soon due to even clamping forces when trq'ed

I get your worry, obviously I would love to say yea, just be careful but if you're putting in the GTE gasket I assume your going to boost. I'd say your HG would blow pretty quick if you don't attend to it.. Good luck on your decision man..

I was def thinking about pulling the block, might as well do the piston rings and rear main seal and get started on the tranny swap, it just sucks because im doing this in my driveway. How would I pull it out without the head on the block? And i'm 200% sure i'd have to give it to the shop disassembled, damn I got my work cut out lol lexforlife text me when you get a chance so we could figure something out

I wasn't really planning on boosting YET, I was just gonna drive it with low compression up until tax time
