Default 94 SC400 check engine light

I have a 94 SC400 with 89793 miles and both the check engine an TRAC OFF light both came on.

What does that mean? The 90.000 mile maintenance?

The shop found the problem. It is the ERG system. They are changing both the EGR value and the modulator and cleaning the passages. Not a cheap deal but too much for me.

Thanks for the help.

I have the same exact problem with my 94 SC400. One mechanic told me to change brands of gas and when I did, both lights now go on and off together. When I was using the other brand of gas, the lights stayed on all the time. Did the changes to your ERG system fix the problem? I'd like to know because it appears I'm having the same problem. Thanks, Joe

Yes cleaning the lines and changing the EGR valve and modulator fixed the problem. The mechanic told me that it could be only one of those things but the problem would come back as the next thing failed. The parts are not cheap and it takes 3 hours labor.

I suppose the type of gas has something to do with it as the type of driving also. The ethanol gas is not the best thing for our cars. Send a letter to Obama as it is all political.

Thanks very much for the update. My nephew is a Philly Cop and he hooked me up with this very good Hispanic mechanic named Junior, who told me to buy a new gas cap and drive around for a few days and see if it fixes the problem. I put the new gas cap on and while driving two days later, the lights went out and so far they haven't come back on yet. I suspect I haven't seen the last of this problem, but for now, it appears to be fixed. Thanks again and best of luck with your SC400. I also have a 1986 BMW 635CSI, much less complicated car, yet still a joy to drive. Take care, Joe

Thanks a lot for the input. After I replaced the gas cap the lights went off for a couple days, now they are back on again. It appears that this issue could have different fixes from the 02 sensor, gas cap and gas, and EGR valve. I'm going to try to find a mechanic who knows the fix for sure, this way I don't end up replacing good parts on the car. Thanks again and have a good one. Joe
