Default replacing rod bearings, motor in car?

I have a 1992 SC300 that I plan to replace the rod bearings in. My question is can you reach all 6 rods just by taking the lower oil pan off? I understand if you remove the upper oil pan, the motor must be removed from the car. Im really not wanting to pull the motor, just for a 1 hour rod bearing job lol.

If anyone has replaced the rod bearings, with the motor in or out please chime in.

Thanks!!
Mike

You can drop the front subframe and hold the engine up with a hoist but other than that its not to fesiable to get the upper pan off with the engine in the car.

^ So are you saying the upper pan must come off to reach the rod bearings?

In the time it would take you to do it underneath the car you could pull the motor have it fully rebuilt and dropped back in.

If it already knocked, it may be too late. You may have to get your crank or rod reground if the clearance is too much and use oversize bearings. If it's true, you need to pull the engine out. Get the clearance spec from the dealer. Buy some plastic gauge from the autostore. Measure and compare spec clearance.

Other problems that you may run into are the bolt breaking because it's brittle or the holes will strip when you remove the bolts. If this happens, it may be tough to helicoil underneath the car.
