98 sc400 vvt-i custom exhaust pipe while retaining stock mufflers..
I took my 98 sc400 to my friend Peter's muffler shop, "All Muffler", in Frisco, Ca 18th & Mission St. These guys are great! My 2 previous sc300s, both 92/95, had custom exhaust piping done by them. The only problem is they don't have a mandrel bend machine, but the work is clean and they don't overcharge either. But anyhow, they did my sc400 today by going "H" pipe underneath. I was leaning close to 2.5" piping all around, but instead went with 2.25" after discovering the stock pipes were only 1 7/8". I would have lost a huge amount of low end by going 2.5". I removed all 3 factory resonators and left the stock mufflers there. It's great! When you come to a dead stop it's as quiet as stock. And even if you drive normally it's only slightly louder outside. But once you hit it, the tires chirp more than before and you just enjoy the 300lb torque from the na v8. Did I mention the exhaust sounds deep as flock at wot. It sounds close to a 2000 m5, but even slightly louder, while taking off at wot. This is definitely a perfect setup for my taste. And if I were to spend a G on a sc400 full exhaust system, I would want it to sound similar. My next performance mod is the custom bfi intake system. This should do very well with the upgraded exhaust pipes.
