Default How do you remove the torque converter?

I pulled my engine and tranny out of my stock 1995 SC400. When I pulled the tranny from the motor the torque converter was on the engine side attached to the flexplate.

How do you remove the torque converter from the engine side? It doesn't seem like prying it is right at all since you will bend splines by doing that. I thought I read somewhere that it is installed by giving it 2 full turns on the crank. Is that how it is supposed to be removed also?

I need some guidance on this. There is no way to take off any bolts that are inside the housing area.... am I missing something?

Any help is appreciated.

Here is a picture for no good reason... I didn't take any pictures of the tranny separated from the engine.

well usually you remove the starter to get to the torque converter bolts... i know the starter is under the intake manifold. i looked up in alldata's repair manual and they don't say how to remove the torque converter bolts... so either there is a special inspection plate somewhere where you can access the bolts or you have to remove the starter...

there should be a black piece of plastic/rubber on the bottom of the oil pan close to the tranny. Remove this piece with a screwdriver and you will see the bolts you will have to rotate the crank to get to all of them.

remove the shield behind the oil pan, on the lower part of the bellhousing. This will give you access to the bolts that hold the T/C onto the Flex plate. Rotate the crankshaft to get to all of them, want to say there's 6, don't quote me on that though.

I've established that there are a couple of bad gaskets.... so I'm going to replace all the gaskets. I also need to replace the timing belt because it is partially frayed. I'm going to throw some nitrous at it, so I'm going to work some of the compression aspects of it and possible get into replacing the internals. I do need a new torque converter, so I'm going to hit up the lextreme deal. I also want to clean the engine up and possibly paint it.

Sounds like a good plan to me. If your replacing the timing belt you might as well want to due the 3 pulley's and the water pump. Easy access to since you have it out. You going to put bigger injectors on it or no? Where in Florida do you live?
