Another SC300 steering issue, and i'm stumped.
Ok, i'll go ahead and admit the hard part, that I'm a mechanic, and i'm stumped on this.
I just bought a 92 SC300 Auto thats just about to turn 200k. During my test drive and initial inspection at the car lot, I never noticed the problem, nor was it apparent on my 200 mile interstate drive home. However, once back in town and doing alot of turniong on the local curvy roads, i found the car has a wierd issue.
The issue: When corning at anything over 40ish mph, and with more than average steering wheel angle, the wheel seems to go slack and then tug a bit in the opposite direction...kind've like an old hot rod with a worn steering box. It'll do this in rapid fire succesion, and can be very unnerving, depending on the speed im traveling.
First chance I got after noticing that, I put the car up on a lift at work and started looking things over.
There's no play in the inner or outer tie-rods, the ball joints are nice and stiff, the rack bushings look fine, and there's no noticable play where the steering shaft comes into the rack.
I've hit a dead end in what i know to look for....maybe one of you has ran into the same thing any found the culprit? I'd love to hear your insight!
