Default Auto SC shifts hard into gear

I'm looking to buy another SC and I have come across one where the owner said it shifts hard going from Park to Drive. The car is a 97 sc300. Is this a big problem? Can it be easily fixed? How much would it cost to fix it. I have not seen the car yet but don't want to waste my time if it is a costly repair. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

Likely will require a new trans in the future.

The guy said there are no missed shifts and shifts ok after it gets into Drive. It is just moving the lever between gears that is tough. Thanks!

check or replace the shift soleniods
disconnect the battery
change oil (toyota type 4)
check the auto shift cable is in the middle

Low fluid, dirty/burnt fluid, rear transmission mount...a few other things to consider.

How easy/hard is it to replace the shift solenoids? Is it expensive? Is it worth the risk to spend 3.5K on a black 97 SC400 with 160k miles and this shifting problem? Thanks!
