First thing you do is post in the engine forum.

Door #1: Do some fancy wiring and it will work and you're left with a weak W58 and it will cost you $1200 to find a Soarer R154 for future upgrade.

Door #2: Buy a brand new 5spd Harness from Toyota for around $1200. Still stuck with a crappy 5spd.

Door #3: Return that motor, buy a 5spd Soarer 1JZ because the W58 is trash anyways. Then have a nice plug and play swap like everyone else with a transmission that can hold 500+hp.

if hes not looking for more then 350ish hp then the w58 is an economic choice. a lot of people blow up transmissions because they dont know how to drive and how to shift.

the w58 is not as "crappy" as you might think. have you ever even driven a w58 equiped car? have you ever owned a supra/SC with a w58 for an extended period of time and modified with the car with that trans?

i think that you read a lot of chit on the forums and regurgitate what you read. contrary to popular belief the forums are not always right.

^^ depends on your year. you can search that.

No reason to buy a JDM Soarer R154 for 1k.. thats a waste. Go find yourself a 87-92 mk3 supra R154. Buy a 1jzgte bellhousing for $300, and buy the shifter parts from canada for $76. Theres your soarer transmission.

W58

"This transmission is very popular as a replacement of other vehicles' weak stock transmissions."

"Toyota engineers have shown favor to the W58 over the rest of the 'W' series by including it in so many models and even building a stronger version for higher powered applications."

Ratios W58:

* First Gear: 3.285:1
* Second Gear: 1.894:1
* Third Gear: 1.275:1
* Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
* Fifth Gear: 0.783:1
* Reverse: -3.768:1

Ratios R154

* First Gear: 3.250:1
* Second Gear: 1.955:1
* Third Gear: 1.310:1
* Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
* Fifth Gear: 0.753:1

It's not the R154 but it sure is not "weak trash". At least Toyota engineers didn't think so. Sure are a hell of a lot cheaper and much easier to find. Just some considerations.

A lot of your questions can be answered by searching.

The W58 is def not trash. My car has 180000 on the stock W58 60000 of which were after my 1 jz was installed. I have no problems shifting and see no reason for an R154.

Max HP of a 1JZGTE? Highest recorded is well over 1000whp here in FL with stock internals at around 9500 rpm.

Same here my W58 going strong and I have trashed the hell out of it. I have yet too see anyone post on here about their trasmission (W58) give up the ghost. With that said can someone post if their transmission gave out and at what mileage and power rating was it handling.
