Default acceleration problems

once again i run into more problems and leave most mechanics scratching their heads ...hope fully someone here may have some ideas.
i was coming back from the beach the other day just cruising down the interstate, and all of a sudden, my car stopped letting me accelerate. i turned the car off and it started back up fine, but i couldnt go any faster than 20mph. its almost like it has some type of limiter on it. it drives ok for now, but i would like to know what it could have been.
