Default oil change

New Lexus supposed to come with complimentary maintenance, but the first 5K miles doesn't include an oil change, should the oil changed every 5K miles?

LEXUS COMPLIMENTARY MAINTENANCE INCLUDES:
NEW LEXUS VEHICLES:
Every new Lexus comes with the first and second scheduled maintenance complimentary. These services are provided at 6 months/5,000 miles and 12 months/10,000 miles, whichever comes first.

6MO / 5K MI
  • This service is normally covered under warranty if done within 6 months or 5,000 miles.
  • Rotate tires and adjust tire pressures as required.
  • Reset maintenance reminder light.
  • Road-test vehicle.
  • Check installation of driver's floor mat.**
  • Inspect and adjust all fluid levels.
  • Program Lexus Personalized Settings***, if requested.
  • Visually inspect brake pads, calipers and rotors.

Isn't it 10K? We've always still done it at 5 at local shops on our other cars.

I change my oil at 5k intervals twice for the NX so far and the oil is dirty enough that I wouldn’t want to leave it in for too much longer.

I don’t recall the exact language, synthetic 0w-20 is recommended every 10k. Other oil grades recommend every 5K. All manner of opinions on this. Do what makes you feel most comfortable.

Our 350h requires 0-16 every 10,000 miles or 12 months, which ever comes first.

Depend on your driving condition. if you actually study the "special operation" list, which you have to change the oil every 5k miles, from the manual, alot of us will fall into some level of it.

For myself, my 350H regularly deal with "low speed cruising" as i run into freeway traffic jam pretty much everyday. I am changing my oil every 6-7k miles.

If you live in Montana, your car just cruise thru without much jam and stop and go, you should do the 10k oil change.

My plan for our 350h is do my own oil change @ 5K (which we are at now) for the early wear, and then have Lexus do the 10K oil change. Then I will continue with the 10K intervals

Default Oil change

Just because it's "recommended " doesn't mean you should do it. Think about it, when you go to the dealer for service, what does the service advisor do? He "recommends" a whole bunch of stuff that you may not need. I've always changed my oil every 3K to 5K miles depending on driving conditions. Always use OE filter and full synthetic oil. Oils with higher Ester content are best. Stick with OE oil weight. If it's 0w20 then always use 0w20. Thicker oil being better for your engine is a myth unless you completely rebuild your engine with different specifications.

Changing oil at 3-5k especially using full synthetic seems unnecessary. Three thousand mile oil changes were recommended something like 30 years ago or more. Engines run vastly cleaner than years ago and obviously oil technology has vastly improved over these years.
I'll check with a PHD tribologist friend of mine to verify my humble opinion in this matter. Also I'm confident there is some online legitimate unbiased research that support extending oil changes to a more reasonable interval.
I had a friend with little resources ($$) and would change his oil every 3k despite the manufacturer's recommendation for a 7.5K oil change interval for the type of driving he did. Didn't make much sense to me.

Exclamation I am surprised with the Lexus lack of technology on oil change

Many cars have gone to automated oil change intervals. Various factors such as length of time, miles driven, oil viscosity, water percentage are ued in some "more sophisticated" cars to determine an exact timing the oil should be changed.

There are still old wife's tales about metal fillings and the need to have the first oil change at 1,000 miles. Then 20 , 30 , 40 years ago people thought you should change every 3K miles, then it became 5K. and now with synthetic oil 10K miles is an acceptable interval that preserves engine longevity.

However, there are still the nay Sayers and those with more money that the know what to do with that want to keep the 5K interval or in some cases still believe in the 3K interval. But remember a rich Lexus owner fool and his money are soon parted.

YMMV,

I guess that is expected for only 5K- check, check, check... What could possibly go wrong in 5K - esp a Lexus? LOL But unless someone knows of why one should bother for something like warranty or some hybrid system check, which is first for me, I will just pass. I suspect most care care enthusiast do these checks anyway.

On Lexus Canada you can enter your NX's info and it will give you the maintenance schedule and owners service. I suspect the US site has something similar.

FWIW the first oil change is at 16k. Unlikely I will wait that long for an oil change

LOL.

That's one way to look at it. Another way is that the 'naysayers' are investing a little extra money in oil changes now in order to preserve the life of their vehicle in the long run. My standard is to change conventional oil at 4K miles and synthetic at 5K, regardless of manufacturer recommendations. I can't prove it's related, but I've also never had to get rid of a vehicle due to mechanical problems - it's always been because I was bored with it, or my life circumstances had changed and I needed a different vehicle. I expect to be driving my old F-150 into the 2040s at least.

And yes, I do my first oil change at 1K miles, too.

Yes, the advice is the same for US and Canada, just adapted to different units ... 10,000 miles is about 16,000 km.
