Default Key fob issues

2022nx. A few months ago after going for a walk at my local park, in cold weather, I get back to vehicle and fob won’t unlock doors. Takes a couple minutes after repeatedly trying and fob finally unlocks doors. Get in, fob won’t start vehicle. Again after a few minutes it finally starts. The reason I mention the cold weather is because key was in pocket, don’t know if being cold would affect it. Not a fob battery issue. A few weeks prior the battery was changed at service.

So I call my lexus dealer service and they blow the situation off like it’s no big deal. They again changed the battery. I then switched to my other fob. Fast forward to this morning and I walk out to my car in the garage and again it’s dead. I get in and go to start and message says press brake and push start which I was doing and nothing. So I grab my phone and start car with app. That’s the strange part because if fob wasn’t operating properly then app shouldn’t have started car. Anyone else running into any fob issues? And my main question is I know you can unlock vehicle with the key located in fob, can you also start car with key? I’m worried I’m going to be stranded somewhere.

Time to get new battery for your fob? Batteries in cold weather lose power and could cause the issues you say. Have you tested the battery and is it time to change? If the battery is low and near dead, you but the fob on top of the start button and press it.

Every weird electrical problem I’ve ever had on my Lexus vehicles. Has always been a main battery about to fail

Clock resetting, XM radio channel presets, Pink infotainment screen, windows wont go up or down

Your car is coming 4 or 5 years old?

Some thoughts.

First, the fact that the app works to start says nothing about the state of the fob. The digital key on the app communicates with the car via BlueTooth radio. The fob uses a completely different radio on a different frequency so one does not affect the other unless there is a general system issue with the car (I assume you were talking about the digital key, not the app's remote start, which would be using another completely different radio than either the digital key or the fob - cellular radio). If you were talking about the remote start, you would still need the fob to drive away, but not start).

Second, if you are experiencing battery/power issues with the fob, the backup option to starting the car is simply to hold the fob up to the start button. When you see the green light show up, then press the button. The fob also contains an RFID chip that can communicate with the car at extremely close range that does not require power.

Finally, regarding the dealer's battery. Be assured that the dealer is NOT using some $20 special Lexus branded button battery of high quality. They are likely buying the cheapest crap by the skid load that probably costs them 2 cents a battery. They may simply have a bunch of shitty or expired batteries that have 10% charge left. The correct next diagnostics step is to go get your own batteries and give them a try first. Its not hard to change as long as you have ok-ish dexterity to pop open the fob case and remove old button cell and pop in new button cell. Usually they are designed so that the mechanical key can be used at a pry point to twist and pop open the fob case (I changed these a lot on my RX over many years but only done the NX one once so my memory might be blurred as to exactly how it goes down for the NX).

If your own (hopefully reputable) batteries also fail quickly, you then might have a defective fob, perhaps stuck in a heavy power draw situation that rapidly depletes the battery.

If you have the Lexus app loaded up on your phone go to the Health tab and at bottom is a key fob battery health function in there to check on too.

I have a '22 NX350H has about 57,000 kms or 36K miles. I still have my original wipers and have just decided now to replace all 3 of them as our next Canadian winter is on the way so I figured it's a good time. They're actually not performing all that bad I just don't want them to let me down this winter when I need them most. The cost for each blade insert is only $13 Canadian and install is quite easy to do. Lots of youtube videos will show you how easy it is. Air filter is about $38 CDN and Cabin Filter is $56 CDN this is the good OE Charcoal filter not econo one too. All parts are Toyota OE brand and will be installed for free with my Lexus ECP ext. warranty during my next Service 1 complimentary service where they do a complete inspection of all filters fluids and brakes. So while they'll be 'looking' at the filters I said I'll provide them will you install for free? Yup. I've replaced original air & cabin filters at about 18k miles initially so these are second replacements. Bought them online at the nearby Toyota dealer owned by same owners who have a Lexus dealer a few doors down. Lexus dealer online prices were a few bucks more each. They're cheaper online by about $29 total and I just order up and pay online and ask for a pick up at the Toyota dealer for only $2 fee.

I've replaced my key fob battery twice in 3 years. So simple to do, again youtube video it, it's very easy to do. Your Lexus app under Health tab will tell you key fob battery health too so go look there if you're concerned about the fob battery.

I called Lexus dealer parts and used my VIN and they gave me all the correct part numbers for my car then I used the Toyota parts site to purchase them all cheaper!
(note there are a few #s used for rear wiper blade apparently so my VIN confirmed which I've got)

As of November 4, 2025
  • Windshield Wiper Blade Refill Rear. Part Number: 85214-42040 Your Price $ 13.00 CAD MSRP $15.00 CAD
  • WIPER. Blade Insert Left Part Number: 85214-02340 Your Price $ 13.00 CAD - CA MSRP $15.00 CAD
  • Wiper Blade Insert Right Part Number: 85214-0R040 Your Price $ 13.00 CAD - CAD MSRP: $ 15.00
  • CABIN AIR FILTER PN: original equipment pn: 87139-0E040 Your Price $55.68 CAD MSRP $63.00 - (economy part is 87139YZZ93)
  • ENGINE AIR FILTER PN: 17801-77050 or new # 17801-F0020 Your Price $37.38 CAD MSRP $45.75 CAD

USE LEXUS SITE TO GET PART NUMBERS THEN PUNCH THEM IN ON TOYOTA PARTS SITE.

https://parts.performancelexus.ca/

USE TOYOTA SITE WITHOUT PUTTING IN YOUR MAKE AND MODEL OR VIN BECAUSE IT WILL NOT LOOK FOR PARTS FOR A LEXUS. USE LEXUS SITE TO GET PART NUMBERS THEN PUNCH THEM IN ON TOYOTA PARTS SITE.
