Default Brake noises thud noise?

Hi Everyone,

My Japan built 7 months old NX 350h has this thud/rubbery noise that I can replicate every time I slowly release the brake from stationary and while in D.

This only happens in this particular scenario. No sounds while braking hard or light braking from movement to stationary.

I have done some quick google and there seems to be multiple opinions about this being normal, light layer of rust from wet calipers/rotors, etc.

I can tell you the car is dry, not washed or exposed to rain for a week and it was driven for 40kms in dry conditions before I took the video. Parking brake and brake hold is off.

Do you have this noise? Is it normal?

TIA for your comments

this seems a very similar sound to the issue I'm having w/ my 32k mile 18' LS500. you can listen to my posted videos and let me know. my noises come from the actual wheel wells though..not from the brake pedal (if that's where your noise originates?)
so far the dealership has replaced all 4 brake pads (though they were not very warn to begin with) with new shim kits in effort to solve the issue...no luck.

Yours sound more like clack or something hitting against something. Mine is more like a thud and sometimes like a rubbery creak, hard to pinpoint where it is coming from when I am inside the car.

I have sent the video to the dealer and waiting for their response.

Sucks that thy have not been able to fix yours. At least they didn't give you the usual run around that it is 'normal' behavior.

Update - took it to the dealer, they compared to other cars they had and determined the noise is 'factory spec' and didn't do anything about it.

Funny, I was provided with an ES250 as a loaner, the brakes also made noises when slowly releasing them from stationary, but the noise was much much quieter compared to my NX.

Here is a link to my google drive with the video of the noises before and after the car was taken to the dealership.

Bonus issue - plastic creaking sounds, which I hear while driving, but they couldn't 100% fix.

I have escalated this to Lexus Corporate, but not holding my breath.

I still like my NX overall, but my image of Lexus being a 'premium brand' has been taken down a notch.

Every Lexus and Toyota I've had over the last 20 yrs can be made to vibrate the brake pads by slowly releasing the brakes just at the point of brake release where the vehicle moves forward very very slightly. At the point of release the brakes will grab and release, grab and release, grab and release very rapidly creating the vibration in an audible range. Doesn't happen when braking at any other speed or if quickly removing your foot from the brake when stopped because there is no grab and release. Used to be one of my pastimes while waiting in a drive thru, make my brakes sing for each millimeter I move forward in the line. Annoyed my wife, not sure which was more fun, lol.

Wow really?! Surely that is not normal or there is a systematic issue here. My 2018 Mazda never had that issue.

I do a lot of city driving at 40km/h or less on stop start traffic, so I hear those brake noises all the time. My noises are particularly louder compared to the ES 250 I was loaned. So yes, while it might be a Toyota/:Lexus 'feature', there must be something that can be done to reduce the noise.

I will might ask my cowroker to let me hear her Rav4 hybrid's brakes..

I found it usually lessens as the brakes wear and become less sticky (effective). The fast and easy solution, switch to non-OEM pads and rotors. On my old Sienna the rear brakes did this VERY loudly and I guess the nature of the vehicle helped conduct the sound. When the noise started to go away, I knew pad life was nearing the end. I had the Toyota dealer do the brakes once and the noise came back. Second time I did the brakes myself with aftermarket parts, didn't make the noise anymore (but they lasted half as long as OEM). I found similar on my RX hybrid but much quieter in general. It had two brake jobs during its life with me, first time with OEM at the Toyota dealer, second time using aftermarket parts myself. Similar findings. My NX does make this noise too, but its also less noticeable. It makes a slight noise on slow release of brakes but its a soft single thump (equivalent to me tapping my finger on my desk once). I mainly hear it in a drive thru when I'm along the side of the building.

Thanks for the info. I could live with a soft single thump, similar to what i heard in the ES 250 or what you have. I now consciously release the brakes quickly, so I don't hear the brake noises.

Anyways, let's see what remedy I can get from Lexus HQ or I am doomed to change the pads. Quite the unrefined experience so far, I guess I expected more from my first Lexus.

Both my ES300hs (2021s) used to make a similar thud upon brake pedal release, at low speeds. drove me nuts. Lets say maneuvering while parking. it would be like a dull metal shudder/thud i felt in the pedal as i release the brake (not press).

Never figured out, never resolved. both brand new cars. The noise/feel developed after about 6 months of use.
