Default Turn off cruise control - How?

Dumb question: How do I turn off cruise control? I don’t mean just canceling it. I mean turning it off altogether so that pressing the + or - button will not engage cruise. I have a non-HUD model.

Our NX is not here yet...I cannot answer you but maybe every question is answered on uTube or Google it. I don't think it can be defeated or programed out if that's your goal.

The same way you turn it on - press the button on the end of the right-hand lever.

Ah the classic Toyota cruise control stalk, used and loved it myself for 20 years, but it IS no longer.

Now, I haven't tried it myself yet, but what if you just try pressing the cruise mode button (which switches between dynamic and static cruise modes) to see if it would clear the set speed. Maybe the mode switch would do this after the cancel. Also, the drive assist button (which sets the initial speed) also functions as a cancel button, maybe cancelling with the button also clears the set speed. I might try it later, but that's just a guess. Otherwise, I'm not sure there is actually a way to clear the set speed without shutting the car off.

I take it I based my answer on my 2019 RX instead of our NX? I though the NX still had the stick, but I haven't driven the car since November. Sorry I gave bad information.

Part of my answer still stands, though. Don't you turn it off the same way you turn it on?

OP here. After I use cruise control, when I press the button that turned it on, it simply toggles between adaptive cruise and "regular" cruise. It doesn't turn it off altogether.
As for the stalk, I love the stalk, haha! I find it very intuitive to use. My other car has the classic Toyota style cruise stalk.

I had opportunity to test this. So in the technical sense you can't really "turn off" cruise control, its kind of always on in one of the two modes. However, you can indeed wipe the set speed so that pressing + will not engage cruise again. After you have cancelled cruise, simply press the cruise mode button TWICE. This will switch modes but also wipe the set speed, so pressing + will give you message on dash something like "cruise cannot be engaged, see manual". At this point you have to use the drive assist button to set a new speed to re-engage cruise.

I hit the "Cancel" button which is in the centre on the right side of the steering wheel to turn off the cruise control.

That only cancels the cruise control, but the previous speed preset is still stored and you can see it on the display.
So after you press cancel button to stop the cruise control, the car is not in cruise control but it's not complete off. You can press the resume button and it will go back to your previous preset speed.

As per what blueless side, you need to toggle the cruise mode in order to remove the preset speed of the adaptive cruise. This will complete turn the cruise control off.
