I've looked through the old threads and cannot find any info on the hatch subwoofer replacement. I am pretty sure it's an 8" sub. I am wondering if Lexus built a small enclosure for it or is it a "free air" sub. Does anyone know so I don't have to tear the hatch apart?

It's 8 inch shallow mount sub. You will have to make a custom bracket/baffle to fit whatever replacement you want to use, in. Folks did plywood one for Highlander. Keep in mind, if you were simply swapping OEM sub for a "better" one, it's a 2 ohm speaker AND it is only as good as power supply to it. I replaced mine on Highlander once with Pioneer shallow mount one. What took me couple hrs, to make a custom baffle and replace it, as you have to splice harness to match aftermarket speaker connection. Result? Zip, no improvement. And it was, by far, a much better speaker vs OEM one.
I keep saying and folks don't listen. Speakers are usually only as good sounding, as power supplied to them. For the hassle and effort and money, a flat downfiring or passive radiator powered sub in the trunk WILL give much better result.

 

Thanks for the info. It will help me out a lot. I have an amp yo upgrade it with. I am in the process of building a fiberglass box for my 10" that will be tucked away in the spare tire area. I wanted to have the option to replace the hatch sub also as I am not using all of the power the amp can give me. A

Don't waste time. When you will have good power supply to hatch sub, it WILL sound much better as is, combined with custom sub you build.
Does it mean you will remove spare tire? I am not sure there is meaningful space available for a reasonable sub volume with it in. Bass is all about air volume and compression.
To be honest, as bass is not directional, once you get good custom sub bass, you won't even need hatch speaker.

Will do. I have the bottom molded now. Time to build the rest. The sub I have only requires .5 cu ft of a sealed space. I'll submit pics. Not removing the spare tire. I had a flat last month. Not sure what I would have done without that.

 

Ah, you sensed underlying gist of my question. 0.5 cf of volume? You will have to have A LOT of compression inside, to produce any meaningful bass then. Unless you doing a passive radiator or tunneled sub like they do in BOSE ones. I LOVE passive rad subs. Very deep bass.
