Celebrating Lexus & Toyota from Around the Globe
I mentioned many years ago that after the 1st year of owning my 2016, I noticed the center console trim where the display and center vent is, the black plastic piece creaks when it is hot. A member years ago said they brought it to their dealer and they fixed it for him by adding insulation. When I brought mine to my dealer for the same and showed the service manager the video of the noise and the fix. They took my car for a few days, and said they fixed it (I took them at their word, I find out this wasn't true later).
The creak continued to happen during the summer since 2018 when dealer said they fixed it. Its not all the time, and only noticeable going on bad pavement, but I know that the creak is there and it annoyed me, and the thought of taking all the panels apart scared me at the time. At that time way back when (2018), there weren't many videos of how to take things apart for the NX200t on Youtube. And I guess I just never bothered to look after bringing it to Lexus and them not doing anything after their "inspection."
Present time. I'm coming close to a decade of owning this car and decided its time to revisit any creaks, rattles, etc. so that I can drive it for another decade. So I started to look for Youtube videos on how to take apart the center console. I saw many different videos and they all had different methods. Some took more things off, some did just bare minimum. Here is the video I used to see how to take the center console apart, it took the least pieces off to access the trim we need to insulate. Ignore the carplay conversion kit part. After watching it, I kicked myself like for real? It is that easy?
It is basically remove two side trims, open the glove, pop that top trim off, then reach around the steering area and pop another piece off. Then slowly pop the silver center piece off. No tools required at all and didn't need that much strength to tug any of those pieces. After taking off the center trim, I knew for sure Lexus dealer lied to me about "fixing" it when I went to them many years ago. There wasn't insulation added to this area at all aside from what had already existed from the factory.
Anyways, I observed the trim piece and noted where I would start the insulating. I bought this many years ago to insulate various points of the car whenever I heard any rattles or creaks. it is no longer available, but I'm sure you can find similar items. So after seeing where the noise would likely have came from, I measured and cut various sized pieces and started covering the underside of that trim. See pictures. I also applied insulation on the top of the vents, see picture.
So once I did all of that, I didn't immediately put everything back. I placed the main center piece back on and pressed on that black center plastic that I had just insulated to pinpoint if there was any more creaking coming from it. There was slightly, very very minimal and only off to the sides. At this point, I'm like, I might as well fix this completely and never have to take all this apart again. So I removed the center piece again and cut / added more insulation felt at the sides where the black trim and the silver pieces hook together (I didn't take a picture of this addition, but you can see the area where these 2 pieces hook together in the picture I had provided).
After that, I just carefully placed everything back together. Reverse the steps that I did for taking it apart. I pressed on the center black trim piece at the display and it feels solid, no creaks, no bending at all.
