With less than 1000 miles my 200t met a rock to the windshield! Really bad so the windshield will need to be replaced. Called my insurance company (USAA) and the NX wasn't even in their system yet. They suggested Safelight Auto glass. Any thoughts on replacement? I was very lucky the hood wasn't damaged.THAT would have been a very sad day. Thank you!

 

Safelight uses the cheapest, thinnest Chinese glass that they can buy.

i would speak with your insurance and inquire if you can go through your dealership.

 

The genuine glass is going to cost at least $1000.00 and that's just the glass. Add another $500 for the installation. That's why you insurance company suggested the lower costing glass.

I have heard even OEM glass has gotten thinner over the years for surfing multiple car forums over the last year or so. I have a 15 year old Isuzu Trooper that never had a nick in the front windshield (till I broke it from the inside out with some lumber!). It was around $300 to replace...Safelite did the job. I'm sure how windshields are mounted in/to vehicles has changed in 15 years so new vehicles may in fact be much more.

I'm donating the vehicle within 6 months anyway, so I didn't really care much about the quality I just had to pass inspection, but the guy that did it seemed to really care. As far as I could tell he did a good job...no noise, whistles, etc....and it was in the 20s F and windy the day he did it. From watching YouTube vids and watching in person I can see this job as an easy one to take shortcuts and screw up.

It was a subcontractor that did the actual work so I'm sure it just depends on who gets the call from Safelite. Re: the quality of the glass itself, that's pretty tough for an average consumer to tell I think.

My insurance did not cover the replacement, though I've heard in some states it may be mandatory that they cover it. YMMV.

 

I'd stick to OEM to ensure you have the sound-proofed "Lamisafe" glass.

 

Safelite did a good job repairing a small crack on my wife's Q50. I wouldn't use their services to replace an entire windshield however. Best bet is stick with OEM through the dealership.

 

It happened to our RX during the 1st year of ownership. It was just a rock and it didn't happen on the highway. All it takes is the rock hits a certain spot of the windshield and the windshield would become so bad that it must be replaced. Originally we suspected it was a stress crack and hoped it was covered by warranty. I forgot what was the criteria for a stretch crack. Anyway, I was told that windshield of such size on SUV is always under high stress.

We ended up going for OEM glass shipped from the dealership to the glass repair shop we picked and the job was great. (Our dealership was honest enough that their contractor may not meet our high expectation)

Actually I can watch the work through the window while they were working on it. I let the glass repair shop know our high expectation upfront and I did mask a lot of areas on the outside and the inside of the vehicle prior to the repair as they need to step on the scuff plate in order to mount the new windshield on a SUV

 

Mercury insurance which i've been with for about 10 years replaced my RX's windshield with an OEM. I was referred to all star glass with a non oem but I was adamant for an oem so the windshield was special ordered from lexus by all star glass and for it replaced with no additional cost besides my deductible

 

you can demand and request the OEM glass and have safelite do it.

it happened to my wifes Mercedes GL Class. i told them that i would not accept a replacement unless its OEM.
so the technician called and it was not a prob. after he got the replacement from a local dealer he came to my house and did it without any prob.

i agree that safelite glass is very cheap as my mother in law already replaced her windshield 3x in a year.

 

I had a stone chip on the front window of one of my RX's that Safelite fixed. I had a choice, try to fix the chip, or a Safelite glass, or a OEM glass at twice the cost of the Safelite windshield.
Fortunately for me the chip repair worked great.
I thought overall Safelite did a good job. As I was traveling they even came to the hotel I was staying at to fix the problem.
