Default Windshield replacement

I have an 2016 nx 200t and now it has a large crack in the windshield from road debris, flying rock that hit my windshield hard. It’s about a foot long now and going up my windshield. My question is, would you replace it with an Lexus oem windshield or an aftermarket. A local shop that works with Lexus is quoting $1200 for Lexus glass and $700 for a Pilkington oem equivalent. I have a $500 deductible from Allstate for windshield coverage that they want me to go through safelite with but I’m hesitant. I’ve gotten quotes from safelite 400 aftermarket, and they didn’t have Lexus glass in their system…. From what the clerk said. I’ve gotten quotes ranging from 1200-1700 for Lexus glass. What would you do? It’s an almost 10 year old car with almost 100K miles on it. I’m hesitant to spend this much money on something that may need to be traded/ sold in the next 50k miles.

thanks

Sorry to hear of your dilemma. For every 10 people that read this, you'll get 11 different responses.

In my humble opinion, with a car that old I would simply go with the aftermarket. I've used Safelite before and was satisfied. I'm really not sure how much better the OEM/Lexus glass is, to tell you the truth. But, if it were me AND the car wasn't as old, I would want the Lexus glass.

I would suggest you surf the internet to search for what 'they' say about aftermarket glass. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a difference between the windshield and all other glass on a vehicle. In other words, with the windshield MAYBE you would lean more towards OEM/Lexus.

Thanks for your input. I don’t even know if Allstate will pay for Lexus glass vs aftermarket. I would think they would be hesitant to pay for it if there were a cheaper option. I’m leaning towards aftermarket… I actually have looked on the internet and there are many varying reports on aftermarket glass lol. Some say it’s trash, some say you don’t notice a difference and others say it has defects, problems with warping and distortions. Anyway I guess I will find out when they install one.

For what it’s worth, I’ve had Pilkington installed on my Honda from Safelite, which is Honda’s OEM glass supplier, and it’s been fine. I wouldn’t hesitate to go with it if I were in your shoes.
