Hi, Newbie here, just joined minutes ago.
I've a 2016 NX200T and last summer while backing out from a parking spot, I noticed that the backup camera's image on the display had changed to show part of the license plate ( could see bottom half of the registration letters & numbers) as well as the regular view of whatever was behind. This was a change from the previous view where no part of the plate was visible. This "new" view has come on ever since when reverse gear was chosen. Weird. Any one had this happened to them with their Lexus(s) ?
I remember searching thro some forums at the time and several Lexus owners had mentioned this phenomenon as well. One even wrote that he visited a Lexus dealership and they showed him 3 new Lexus vehicles with this "new" view. Weirder and weirder.
I have a family member who works for Toyota and he tells me that Toyota DO NOT do OTA (Over The Air ) updates. I have to admit I like the "new" view better. If you are pulling a trailer, you can line up the hitch and the ball first and every time !
Just wondering if only a handful of us are "seeing" things. Still bugs me but in a good way.
Yes, no adjustment in menu as you mentioned. Just mystified how the original display which showed no view of the license plate suddenly showed a partial view of it 6 years later.
Please check out post from Redline007 on Oct 2nd 2021 from 3rd Gen Lexus IS model forum commenting on same issue. Disclaimer : we are not the same person, not related and do not know each other but only share this same out of body experience. LOL
I have a 2019 NX and it includes the ability to select between reverse camera "Rear View" and "Wide Rear View" display modes. The attached images were copied from the owner's manual. The icons labeled [A] are used to make the selection. The lower images show the differences between them.
My suspicion (which I cannot prove or disprove) is the cameras in the 2015-2017 are identical to 2018-up, but the software team ran out of memory space to implement some intended features, or to display the view-selection icons. This shortcoming could have been remedied in later model years by more efficient software code or by adding more memory space.
There may be an undisclosed way to make the selection, which some have unintentionally reproduced. You might try "clicking" in the region where the icons are shown in the 2019 manual while the rear-view image is being displayed.
@n0v8or The feature that you outlined in your reply above is not available in my 2016 year. No icons A and B displayed on the screen to 'click' on. My owners manual only shows and explains what the lines meant and how to use them to guide one backing into a parking spot.
Continuous improvement each year from Toyota/Lexus I'm presuming. And I'm fine with the new 'wide' view as its an improvement over the previous 'OEM'. IMO.

My 2016 Nx 200t had the exact same issue. It happened two years ago, and now it show more and more view of the license plate
I'm starting to have doubts about Toyota/Lexus not doing OTA's ( see my earlier post ) . These changes in backup camera views cannot happened on their own. If there is the 'OnStar' feature existing and just today Tesla was reported they will do OTA upgrades to their self drive program, so the technology/opportunity is there to use. Perhaps Toyota for whatever reason(s) ( most probably COST ) chose to only do this view upgrade to a selected few.
I searched the IS - 3rd Gen and GS - 3rd&4th Gen model forums and there were threads on this upgrade phenomenon too. See related topics - Threads below.
