Default Bag Tax??????

So I go to the Harris Teeter for lunch the other day and while checking out the cashier says "if you want a bag there is a $.05 fee". I say no thanks as I only have a slice of pizza, a salad, and a drink. Then, the next day I go to a local carry-out and as I am paying for my order the cashier says "If you want a bag there is a $.05 fee".....What?!?!?!?!?!? I say no thanks, Ill just take my carton of food as is, with no bag. While waiting for my food I walk over to the grocery store and pick up a few essentials, Franks red-hot, soap, and deodorant. I go to the self check-out isle,,, you know the one that dosent require any human interaction,,, and I realize that at the end of the belt where all my crap is waiting there are NO BAGS!!! Where am I supposed to put all this stuff that I just bought??? Whatever. I carry my loose items over to the carry- out joint where my car is parked, drop them off in my ride and go inside to get my food. While paying I ask about the new fees and they tell me that this is not just some fee but some kind of new tax on bags. What?!?! Thats right folks you are now being TAXED on bags.

So my question to the NELOC peeps is this ....Is your state taxing you for bags?

How do you feel about being taxed on bags?

What are the implications and repercussions for being taxed on bags?

Why after all these years of unlimited bag benevolence and serendipitous satchel slinging must we now bear the burden of this bag tax??

This is nothing new. Am assuming that you are talking about the new Harris Teeter in the Fort McHenry plaza shopping area that just opened? Stores like Giant, Wegmans, and just about ANY place where you buy items in BULK (Costco, Sams Club, BJ's, etc.) have been doing this for years, and with the way things go these days, we as a society, have become so complacent with having to say no to the extras, that sometimes we really dont listen to what is being said. Stores do this, and have been doing so for years, in an effort to push/emphasize recycling. Almost seems like they want to shame us into doing what is "politically correct", or else pay for it. LOTS of stores, particularly grocery stores are on the re-usable bag kick, in which they encourage you to bring your own shopping bag for your groceries, or they will be happy to sell you one.

Here in NJ, there is no "bag tax". However, all grocery stores around here encourage you to buy canvas bags for $1 available near the check out. When you check out and you're using your canvas bag, the grocery store PAYS YOU $.05. Actually, I believe they adjust $.05 off your total but same thing.

Well said, except, I'm not concerned about the 'rich' as i'm more concerned about the environment!

Our pockets are the only way to make people pay attention.

Usually, these plastic bags ends up in land fills and our reservoirs from which we open our kitchen taps for drinking water and for cooking.

We have to start somewhere and "fees & taxes" sure does get everone's attention! I now have a canvas shopping bag in my trunk's cargo net.

I have been aware that a few grocery stores have been charging for bags, and thats fine. But now its a mandatory tax. When you go to the grocery store it is usually a planned trip and before you leave your house you can grab your environmentally friendly bag. A bag that is probably made by slaves in China, who work in some unregulated manufacturing plant that spews toxic byproducts onto the shores of some uninhabitable beach somewhere. But who cares about that,"GO GREEN!" I guess my beef is with the convenient stores and carry-out food places. When you go to these places you just want to run in, grab some crap, and then run out with some crap in a bag. You normally dont say "hey honey, we're going to 7-11 later, dont forget to pack the bag." You normally say "Im going to 7-11". And before you finish saying eleven you are already inside choosing what 2 for 2.22 deal you want to get. Well its not going to change so I might as well stop crying about it. Ill forget about it after a little internet **** and some booze, as long as I have those I dont give a,,,,,, nevermind.........

like i said i think bags should be a luxury only the rich can afford, then we can more easily see who is who when walking down the street. those carrying their belongings in bags are obviously better than those just holding their belongings in their hands

Yes sir , I like the way you think. Except I would like to see the price of a bag increase to One-Thousand Dollars! That would truly separate the rich from the poor. Bags will become the most coveted status symbol of the elite. All of our most famous rappers will be dressed in gold chains with grocery store bags hanging from the end and when they smile their mouth will be filled with bags. The music videos will feature big butt ladies dancing, with bags falling from the sky all around them in slow motion. Yes, I now have hope for the future. Im going to quit drinking and go to church and pray for my dream.
