Member Help thread from a Lexus Certified Technician
98 GS400, A technician told me the filler neck and the charcoal canister need changing. I had changed the gas cap, light still came on, found a Vapor Canister and Filler pipe on www.Newlexusparts.com for fair prices, is this a job for the dealer/shop? Do you know a rough estimate of time and possible cost?
so this is great... I have 99 Lexus rx 300, 135,000 miles. Got it back from dealer in november one similar code comes back up p 0302. car not running right, lack of power. Dealer changed: center pipe cat and resonator, o2 sensor, air fu sensor, valve assy, camp ti, plug and full tune up , oil , fully services, timming belt. ran perfectly till NOW. What can I do ? Just need this fixed!!!!!

I have 3 Lexus vehicles ('96 SC 300, '99 RX 300, & '99 GS 300) and I am a believer in their engines, esp the Inline 6 in the GS & SC series. I have learned to work on that engine farily well over the years (changed plugs, radiators, MAF, Coil Packs, Brakes, O2 sensors etc..). HOWEVER, the timing belt in the '96 SC 300 recently broke and I am contemplating trying to fix myself. I have 292,000 miles on that car and the engine/tranmsission run perfectly. I had the timing belt replaced in the RX 300 a few months ago and the entire job cost me about $1250. My mechanic who I trust is honest is quoting me about the same to replace the belt in the SC along with the water pump, tensioner, drive belt, and some seals. My question - Is the timing belt replacement something that I should try to DIY, esp since the car is so old and probably not worth more that $2500 anyway? I have been looking online for a good DIY guide with pictures so I can judge the level of difficulty but haven't been able to find one yet.
Does the 98 GS400 and 98 SC400 have the same OEM intake set up? I am looking for the inlet connector for my GS, and someone has one for the SC and say they are the same, trying to figure out if this is true or not before I buy it

If your timing belt "broke" Your valves may be bent. It may be a lost cause at that point unless you want to remove the head and get it checked.
It should be the same piece If I remember correctly.
I was told that the I6 in the 96 SC 300s were "non interference" engines and that would have kept the pistons from striking the valves. Is that not true? I say the belt "broke" because the I tried to start the car one morning and it wouldn't crank. I took the top cover off and realized the belt was toast. So the car wasn't on the road when the belt "broke", it seems that the belt snapped as soon as I tried to start it that morning. Hopefully I haven't trashed this engine. I really like that car. Any additional insight you can provide into the difficulty of this job would be greatly appreciated. I definitely will have to DIY if there is a possibility of valve damage. I don't want to pay $1200 to fix something just to find out the engine valves are trashed.
