I just learned something new! Thanks Mr. Euro for posting this!

I swear, I always thought the number was a brightness factor (8K HID's would be twice as bright as 4K HID's). What can I say, I'm fairly stupid.

So, with HID's, it's just a preference for the color-choice of the light, or is there another factor to take into account (laws, etc)?

Habious, the higher the number, the brighter the light is gonna be, however the less "user friendly" the actual light output is gonna be. 8k,10k is gonna be super bright looking directly at them, however, they will also have more of a blue factor and as far as visibilty is concerned, not very well on visibility in lighting up the road. Light will appear more blue as you go higher up in number. Most stick with 6K to get the more "user friendly" light output, as well as have good visibility when lighting up the road. Local laws do vary when it comes to HID's, especialy if you place them on a car which is known for not comping equipped with them; ex. Chevy Aveo. It is not illegal to have them, however, you can get ticketed for them being too bright, especially if you have no way to aim/ corect the light pattern so that it does nto blind other drivers. You can also get a ticket for them being too "blue" in color as well. Just be careful when seeking out a HID kit, as all are not created equal. Some of the lesser brands will just blast the light every which way and you really have no way in which to aim/ correct this problem. Some of your higher quality kits will actually have a shield built directly over the bulb in order to aid in keeping the light aimed and focused so it does not blind others. Just do your homework when looking for HID's.

Just wanted to add one thing. The higher the color temperature the more color you will see in the light. In general, all color temps emit the same amount of light but due to the more colorful hues of light that the higher color temps offer, they tend to not show up as well on dark asphalt.
