Description:

Second owner with all pertinent paperwork. Royal Jade Pearl Color. Paint 9/10. Leather Trip Package in excellent condition. Power Moonroof with Sunshade.16" Aluminum Alloy Wheels. Color Keyed Rear Spoiler. Traction Color System. And much more
Purchased in 2002 from original owner. All maintenance and repair records kept since purchase. Drives beautifully but noticed small oil leak recently which revealed head gasket motor leak which I don't want the expense of fixing now, which is reflected in the very low asking price of $5,000 OBO. Would prefer Southern California resident who can come and look over the auto, and if really interested, visit my excellent mechanic for the work needed.

Beauty. But I'm confused about the head gasket issue- you have to mean valve cover gasket right? Minor job in comparison, wouldn't want you selling it because it just needs ~$100 in parts and several hours of labor.
These engines aren't really known for blowing a head gasket unless overheated. And a external oil head gasket leak is even more rare.

My mechanic, who has always been accurate and fair with the price with me, tells me it is a head gasket leak and will cost $4,800 to fix. The car has never overheated, so I am somewhat confused as what I have read about this problem in that it is usually is caused by overheating. That is why the price is so low, to allow someone to pay for the head gasket work, and still have a Lexus of this vintage and condition for a total cost of $10,000. Thank you for taking the time to let me know your thoughts on the subject.

I would definitely get at least a second opinion on the head gasket diagnosis.

He might be referring to cam seals that need to be replaced that is a very time consuming job and makes sense with the price he quoted.

Can’t be that - timing and water pump on the 1UZ pre VVTI including cam and crank seals should be like $1500-2000 max depending on your cost of living area. At the dealer last I checked it was $2200.

The mechanic I saw today said the leaks come from the cam seals and transmission return line, with the major problem and cost being the cam seals. He didn't quote me price on the cam seals as he said he doesn't have the tools to fix it. I don't know now what I'm going to do with the car at this point. Thanks for the input.

I’m less familiar with the transmission return line but replacing cam seals are routine as part of timing job for this engine (although some people forget to do it). I have a 95 LS with same engine and a few years ago I had timing, water pump, cam seals and crank seal done for $1750. I’m in NY in a high COL area.

Unfortunately not, I'm up in Seattle. That said, I am more than willing to take a flight to check out the car in-person. I've read the listing pretty closely and I understand the concerns you addressed. If everything checks out once I see it, I'd be ready to move forward. I also want to mention that I deeply appreciate how upfront you've been in the listing; that's what drew me in. I can fly out this Friday night and we could talk things through or check the car out together Saturday morning- if that works for you, of course!
