I am considering buying a 2015 used Lexus ES. L/Certified models tend to run several thousand more than non-certified, and since I do not expect to outrun the 70,000 mile cap on the powertrain, the coverage benefit of L/certified is essentially for extending the original limited warranty to 6 years. Is a Lexus vehicle service agreement a better value? I have seen lots of horror stories on thrid party warranties.

Yes. You will get essentially all of the same benefits of a CPO vehicle with an extended warranty through Lexus Financial.

The one advantage to buying a CPO vehicle is that the dealer will fix anything and everything that needs to be fixed before they certify it, and will replace tires and brakes if they are 50% worn or more. A standard pre-owned vehicle usually will not get that treatment. A Lexus dealer will make it right, but they're not obligated to make it "like new."

If the vehicle you're looking at is in that condition anyway, there is no real benefit to purchasing a CPO. But it is definitely worth paying for the Lexus extended warranty vs. a third-party warranty.
