coming from my sunroof on my 99 gs, curious how to get rid of it. also doors click when you open em and close em, do i just tighten those torque bolts down. thanks bryan
Can you be more specific for each item:
1. does the sunroof rattle when closed, sliding closed
does the sunroof rattle when open, sliding open
can you wiggle it any amount when it is half open or closed.
does it rattle when it is in the vent position--back tilted up
does it rattle more when it is cold outside, does it rattle less
after the inside of the car has warmed up
Before you can get rid of it (the rattle) you have to know what causes it. It may be just a loose nut or screw.
2. Do all the doors click?
Put your ear near, try to isolate where the click is coming from.
Is it an electric type of click (door lock) or is it more like
something is not lining up right when they close.
Did the door clicking commence about the same time as the
sunroof rattling
Have the doors been apart lately, ie to install speakers or fix
power windows
i should have been more specific, the sunroof rattles when the sunshade is closed, it seems to be what is rattling perhaps. And the door noise is coming from the hinges, i think it might be the torque screw that is clicking, its coming from the passenger side. sorry for the lack of info.
The sunroof itself has one or more TSBs regarding rattling of the roof. Many of us have noticed that the sun shade will back up slightly from it's fully closed position within a few minutes of driving, at which point it starts to rattle. Push it forward again and it stops.........for a few minutes. Mine, at least, doesn't rattle much when the shade is fully open.
I've talked with the tech at my dealership and he says this is relatively common with the GS but, as yet, there's no good fix. Another member here (bit, take your bow) fixed his with some Velcro, attaching a small amount of the hook fastener to the leading edge of the shade. Don't know how well it has held up, though.
you know i heard something like that too. it would only happen when i closed the door. it was also becuase the window was down. i think its normal. when rolled up theres no sound. maybe that helps. i understand how anoying those rattles are. my front dash rattles where the windshiel meet the dash. anybody know whats up with that?
My SC's moonroof had a rattle that drove me nuts. A helpful CL member pointed me to the air deflector that rises upwards when the roof is opened. That piece had a tendency to rattle against itself. I confirmed that by wrapping it with a rag and then riding around- sure enough, no more rattles.
To make the fix permanent, I glued some rubber pads in strategic spots, and now my ride is quiet.
the black plastic on the sunroof, is it possible to take apart and see if something rattles inside it? i am going to use some padding on the wind deflector, btw the noise has never vanished after a year...dang
To clarify what I said, on my SC400, the black plastic deflector didn't exactly rattle against itself (which I guess is technically impossible). I meant that it rattled against its support arms, and various other parts of the area it rests in when the roof is closed.
It's a bit tedious, but if you methodically cushion various parts of the rattling area, you'll eventually isolate it.
I wish every big city had a shop with a "rattling inducer"- a big rack to mount your car onto that shook it at various frequencies until you heard the offending rattle. Then a whole gang of white-coated technicians, armed with rubber shims and glue, would swoop down and silence them rattles forever!
(This is the part where certain CL members say:
"I got one of those 'rattling inducers'- it's called my stereo...!")
i have a aftermarket stereo, and it causes the noise to reproduce all the time, so i got 70 yards of brown beard (dynamat) i am going to do the headliner, and rear deck where my stereo lies. Doors too if i am left with some, this noise must leave!!!
