Questions for DIY oil changers
this may help you: http://mkiv.com/techarticles/parts/t...ter/index.html
i use the 90915-20004. i'd guess the few bucks more is worth the peace of mind.
since you do 6 qt like me, where does that read on your dipstick? please tell me also how you are taking that reading (engine state). thanks.
After removing the oil filter, I noticed that the Lexus filter I removed and the Toyota filter I was about to install are a little bit different and although it would have fit, I didn't want to risk it (by the way, a new motor for the GS4 is almost $20,000!)
So I went back to Lexus and the parts guy said its best to go with the correct oil filter from Lexus because the valve inside the filter may be different. You guys buy that?
Best: 90915-20004 Denso "Made in Japan" V8 spec
90915-YZZB5 Cheaper version of 20004, without bypass valve
90915-20003 Same as 20004 but smaller, V6/I6 spec
08922-02011 Domestic-made by Purolator. V6/I6 spec.
And more variations on the YZZ theme which I won't bother to list.
Some Lexus dealers cheap out and use the 08922-02011 even on V8 engines. I've seen this particular filter on sale for $1.99 at times. The cheapest I've seen the 90915-20004 is $7.
Im about to do an oil change, i have a 2002 GS300 with around 8000 miles, what type of oil brand is the best for my car?
I have been trying to post a reply for a few days now, but I kept getting this message "no thread specified" (I did everything right on my end) You guys every get this problem?
I'll definetly stick with the 90915-2004 filter.
Last time I checked the oil level was on a warm engine (after the car sat for 10 minutes), and it was exactly on the Full line. So for me, 6 quarts is what it takes. If you ask a Lexus tech, he will say its 5 and 3/4, but when I change my oil, I wait for that last 1/4 quart to come out.
Now that you mention it, I believe I misspoke -- I think it is the other way around too. Since I don't do that every-other thing, I'm sure my memory was vague with regards to what others are doing. It was >1 yr ago that I remember coming across that in the posts here.

I have a 00 gs400 and it was service at lexus for 60k miles. the brought the car for a deal and the next oil change is 70k, but should I change it to mobil 1 5-30w (recommend by manual) or 10-30W. Not sure which grade to use bc of the 67k miles..

I guess the bottom line is, use your own preference (either dino or synthetic oil). Synthetic helps your car start up better and last longer, but the benefits are better seen on a high mileage vehicle. There are many people who have used dino oil all their lives, and never encountered a problem with the engine or gasket leaks. Other factors vary, so it's basically up to you
a question for you guys.... what do you do with the left over oil? how do you dispose of them?
Oh, and thanks guys for the information about the oil filters, I'm going to start using the V8 filter on my GS3

Robert, I did an oil change on my ES a few days ago (my first time on my own!). My ES currently has over 90K miles, and after some consideration, I decided to start using 10W-30 synthetic oil since I hear it's recommended for high mileage vehicles (esp. in the summertime). I know Valvoline makes a special motor oil designed for vehicles with over 75K miles.
