Default Radiator fans? a/c fans? dont come on

1990 LS
Are the two big black fans behind the grill supposed to come on when the car bs being driven? or when the a/c is on?
I have never seen mine on, I tried truning the a/c on and they dont do anything.
Anyone have any clues?

These fan are suppose to come on when you turn the ignition to the on position. I have a 91 LS400 and they went out. I ended up replacing them with 2 universal fan from Autozone. It was effecting my AC performance.

I called my local toyota specialist and they told me they have never had to repalce the fans themselves, but more likely the power unit goes out. This makes sense - how can both fans go out at the same time?
He told me I could just hook up some power wire and touch it to the fan motors and see if they work. Just gotta figure out a way to get to them now.
how much did you pay for the fans?

when water temp. is below 181 degrees, fans should not turn when you turn the ignition to ON position. If it does, something might be wrong such as sensor, relay or wiring.

There is a way to check your fan.
Diconnect connector at the temperature senor, located at the the driver side of the radiator.
Then turn the iginition to ON position. Your fans should turn.

or, when you raise water temp. to above 199 degrees, fans should come on.

lvanundy,

Invest in a repair manual. It will show you how to troubleshoot the problem. After you fix one problem, you cover the cost of the manual. Instead of paying someone to fix it you use that money to buy a repair manual and fix it yourself

Steve Ganz of Carson Toyota 800-908-6968. Remember to get the electrical manual also. Total should be less than $145

Good Luck
