Default check engine light

My 99 ES 300 is giving a code of PO446. What should I do?

I don't know if the CEL codes are the same between between the 1999 3.0L Camry and the 1999 ES, I would assume they are though since the engines themselves are both 1MZ-FE. Anyway, the code on the Camry indicates that the Gas filler cap no longer holds a good seal. This seems to be pretty common with the 99 Camry's. People who have replaced the gas cap have seen the CEL go away altogether, while for others the light goes away for a bit and then spits out more codes telling them to replace the Charcoal Canister.

I would replace the gas cap and take it from there, good luck!

I've tried a new gas cap. Also, the trac off light is on. The CEL/TRAC off light came on for the first time when it was low on fuel, if that helps. I've had it cleared and it comes back after a few days.
Thanks in advance.

I'd be willing to bet then that it is your charcoal canister. This does happen with lots of Camry LE owners as I have read. I also read that after replacing the charcoal canister if your CEL/Trac OFF light remains on, then it is probably due to the VSV (Vacuum Switching Valve) remaining open due to something (most likely a piece of charcoal resulting from the failed charcoal canister) being sucked up into it.

Hope this helps!

thanks. Is there any way to test it to make sure that's what it is before replacing it completely? What exactly fails on them?

sexilexi, here are a couple links to help you out with the error code:

I located it behind the gas tank and inspected all hoses and container for cracks etc. Couldn't see anything visibly wrong with anything. I do occasionally smell gas vapors. It's in there good; how do I get to it to replace it?
