Default **Need help! Parts for starter install..........

Hey guys, wondering if anyone could help me out.

I am having the starter replaced in my 98 GS400. I was told that I also need to replace the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets in case they are worn or tear during removal. Does anyone know anymore information about this? Where to purchase? Price? Any help would be appreciated.

I have already purchased the starter, just need to know what else I need.

Thanks guys!

i just fixed my starter last weekend. i'm planning to post a diy.

what you need to replace:

2 manifold gaskets
1 throttle body gasket
2 rear water bypass joint gaskets
2 copper starter contacts

what i did was changed the contacts in the starter. the starter does not need to be replaced usually, just the contacts. so i went ahead and changed both copper contacts.

good luck

So you think I can just replace the solenoid contacts?

I can hear it moving it just doesn't turn over.

I have a cert. Lexus tech doing the work for me so he could probably fix it.

**BTW, is there any way to get it to crank so I can at least get it to the shop?

does it give you a single click when you turn the key? that will signal contacts needing to be change. mine were quite worn down, even the plunger showed signs of wear. just try to keep cranking at it, sooner or later, it should start. took me 30 minutes one time to start the car.

Yeah gives that intial click.

Man I've been trying to start it for the past two days with no luck. I heard there is a hole on the side of the engine where you can reach down with a screwdriver and tap on something? Anyone know? I'm a sitting duck and I need a ride!

Also, where did you get your parts?

there is a gap between the starter and the manifold, but after taking that whole thing apart, i highly doubt you can fit anything in there to hit the starter.

i got my parts from carson toyota in california.

is it cold over where you live? with bad contacts, it'll be extremely difficult to start the car in cold weather. might just have to get the car towed to the mechanic.

Please do, and don't forget to provide a link in this thread. Thanks. I know a lot of people here will be very appreciate it, including myself.

Why would Lexus/Toyota places the starter at that location ?

Well guys I went old school and used a hairdryer to heat up the engine. Pointed the dryer into the hole on the side of the manifold.

Sat for 30 min. and I eventually got the car to start!!!!!

Hey guys I got the starter fixed this past weekend.
I got the starter and gaskets for $220 and the install at Lexus for $350....

The guy who runs the performance shop that works on my car, his buddy is a cert. Lexus mechanic. SO, if anyone needs the hookup on maintenance on a Lex/Toyo just PM me.
The regular price for the install was $800!

if you are going to do all that work, pulling the whole manifold out, water bypass joint under the manifold, then i think you should might as well change them, just for peace of mind. my water bypass joint gaskets when i pulled them out had a small rip in rubber near the edge. plus the rubber on the throttle body gasket was all flattened out.

TOTAL COST OF REPAIR JOB: $87 (damn cheap with peace of mind)
