I'm attempting to find out conclusively if this particular engine is an interference or non-interference engine. I've contacted several quality mechanics in the Fresno,Ca. area and all have indicated to me that it is in fact a non-interference engine, but when I brought this to the attention of the mechanic who recommends replacing the engine with a low mile Japanese engine due to damage to the existing engine from the timing belt breaking, he showed me a manual regarding "timing belts" and under the SC400 engine it stated that it was in fact an interference engine and would incur severe damage should the timing belt break. I'm just trying to get a clear cut answer regarding this engine. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
i'm confused... u said u contacted several mechanics who said it's non-interference, but u take it to the one mechanic who says it is?
have u asked him exactly what is damaged in the engine to require it's replacement? has he even opened it up yet?
it was also my understanding that the sc400 was non-interference, but u say this mechanic had a manual that states it is interference... now i'm lost too!
was the 1z motor even available in japan for the sc/soarer? i thought the biggest baddest engine they had overseas was that twin-turbo inline-6.
If the belt is already broken, you can check the clearance by turning the crank with a wrench. No need to ask around, just check it and that's that. Turn the cam a couple notches too if you are in doubt.
