has anyone actually had an EGR valve that went bad?

I mean its a pretty rare occurrence for most cars, but it seems every Lexus dealer in town recommends a new one any time there is a problem. has anyone actually tested their seen it failed and replaced it?

I cleaned my EGR and the solenoid worked, but a few weeks later, I'm told its bad and to cough up 500 bucks
