Question

Mine is making a loud whirring sound and seems to be on the way out although it still blows ICE cold. Where could I get one without having to be threatened for paying for everything ie Dryer, Receiver, Condenser, Expansion valve etc, does anyone know? Thanks Geoff.

I wish I could be of help.. but I have the same exact problem. The whirling noise is low now but i expect it will get louder if i use it more. The condenser works so I wonder if it could be bearings gone bad and if I could just replace that?

Just look in the yellow pages and start calling auto parts stores. Someone should carry it. If they don't have it in stock most can order it. Just make sure you call a bunch of stores, because you will find the price vary as much as 100 for the same part.

Alternatively you can go with a used compressor if you want. There is a salvage yard near where I live that deals in only toyota/lexus cars. I'm pretty sure he would have one. But for the price of a new/rebuilt one I would do that for piece of mind.

Oh, you still need to have the system evacuated before you replace the compressor, and most shops recommend you replace the drier as well. Though I have just replaced the compressor on other cars before and not done the drier without any problems. Just as long as you don't leave the system open for a long period of time. But it should only be about 60 for a drier, and easy to replace if you want to do everything right.
